JULIAN GERMAIN - The People's Visual History
A book by Julian Germain in collaboration with Sunderland fans and local people that were there. Featuring photography and new portraiture and a personal account of the cup run and win written by Sobs. 170 pages, over 150 colour images.
Sunderland’s extraordinary FA Cup run and their ‘giant killing’ triumph in the final - as a Second Division team against the then mighty Leeds United - was one of the biggest shocks in the history of the competition and a real-life football fairy-tale, reaching far beyond the usual football boundaries and affecting the whole community in an outpouring of civic pride and pure joy.
This book showcases a spectacular collection of original material associated with that 1973 Cup run that was either created or collected by the fans and local people who were there. It features snapshot photos, home-made banners, scarves, rosettes, scrapbooks, memorabilia and all kinds of mementos.
Such items rarely get attention but they are ‘the people’s visual history’ and they offer a valuable and distinctive viewpoint that truly captures the emotions and experiences of the time.
