JOHN FOSTER - When Grandad Was at School

At school we are learning about changes at school, we have some books and pictures which show what school was like long ago...

This series is the non-fiction component of Oxford's popular infant reading scheme, "Oxford Reading Tree". It introduces non-fiction to infant children, and focuses on developing the information retrieval and handling skills they need. The series encompasses a whole range of genres, illustration styles and subject focuses. Unit B supports National Curriculum history and geography, exploring the diversity of family groups and touching on religious studies as well as developing reading skills and demonstrating different styles of non-fiction writing.

Oxford Level 6
Stories in Level 6 are longer and more complex than in previous levels.

By Level 6, your child will often notice when their reading does not make sense, and they will go back to correct themselves without being asked to. They will be able to work out many words automatically without sounding them out. They will be working on more alternative spellings for different sounds – for example, they may know that the ‘igh’ sound can also be spelled ‘ie’, ‘y, or ‘i’.

Approximate age: 5–6 years old
School: Year 1
