HOWARD COUTTS - Toulouse-Lautrec and the Art of the French Poster

A survey of the art of the French poster of the late 19th century, specifically focussing on two exhibitions that introduced these posters to Londoners in 1894 and 1896. The appendix contains transcriptions of contemporary reviews, with some of the earliest English reviews of Toulouse Lautrec, Bonnard and Steinlen. The authors...are to be congratulated on writing a booklet that deserves a place on the shelf of even the most specialized of libraries. For they have resurrected two semi-forgotten exhibitions of posters held in London in 1894-5 and in 1896...the authors have written a fascinating account of the hall and the exhibitions, and how the posters were seen by the press, and (presumably) the British public. They have added an important chapter to the history of the poster, on which future historians will draw gratefully (Anthony Griffiths, Print Quarterly, September, 2006)
